Abstract:
Objective: To investigate the clinical effect of the needle traction technique for correcting oral deviation in the treatment of idiopathic facial nerve palsy (IFNP) and its effect on the hemodynamics of the facial artery and its branches. Methods: A total of 74 patients with IFNP were randomly divided into treatment group and control group, with 37 patients in each group. The patients in the control group received conventional Western medicine treatment combined with conventional acupuncture, while those in the treatment group received the needle traction technique for correcting oral deviation during the subacute and recovery stages of IFNP in addition to the treatment in the control group, and both groups were treated for 4 consecutive weeks. The two groups were observed in terms of the hemodynamic parameters of the facial artery and the superior and inferior labial arteries on the affected side (peak systolic velocity [PSV], end-diastolic velocity [EDV], and resistance index [RI]), the House-Brackmann Grading System (HBGS) grade, and Facial Nerve Function Index (FNFI) before and after treatment, and clinical outcome was assessed for both groups. Results: Two patients in the treatment group and 2 patients in the control group were lost during the treatment period, and finally 35 patients in the treatment group and 35 patients in the control group were included for analysis. There was a significant difference in overall response rate between the treatment group and the control group [91.43% (32/35) vs 82.86% (29/35), P < 0.05]. After treatment, both groups had significant changes in the hemodynamic parameters of the facial artery and the superior and inferior labial arteries on the affected side, HBGS grade, and FNFI index, and there were significant differences in these indicators between the two groups after treatment(P < 0.01 or P < 0.05). Conclusion:The needle traction technique for correcting oral deviation combined with conventional Western medicine treatment can effectively improve facial artery blood perfusion and restore facial nerve function in patients with IFNP, and therefore, it holds promise for clinical application.
